Math is a beautiful and educational subject because it is a powerful language for learning to think. From a young age, children are familiar with math. Math is not just numbers, symbols, not just memorization, but meaningful math.

A total of 19 students of UNY International Mathematics Education class participated in a sit-in program at Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI), Malaysia for five days recently. The students were accompanied by Vice Dean I of FMIPA UNY, Dr. Suyanta and Coordinator of Mathematics Education Study Program, Dr. Ali Mahmudi.

In general, learning mathematics both at school and at university has changed. Along with the advancement of information technology (IT), learning mathematics has varied, for example students are given reading references on the internet, even teachers in giving assignments to their students have also gone through the internet, and students also submit assignments also via the internet. Thus, learning mathematics will feel easier.

In learning, students in schools and universities are skilled in counting but not necessarily skilled in mathematics. This is because mathematics involves the ability to analogize, the ability to interpret, conclude, generalize.

In mathematics, there are many theorems that are built from previously agreed definitions. A student who learns mathematics will automatically be trained to honestly use definitions or theorems to prove the next theorem. This proving process also trains openness to receive criticism and suggestions from others so as to get valid and accountable evidence.

On Friday, November 16, 2018, KBK Applied Mathematics Department of Mathematics Education FMIPA UNY held a public lecture on Control Theory and its Applications. The resource person was Dr. Noorma Yulia Megawati, M.Sc. Lecturer in Mathematics at Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta. The activity, which was attended by 35 students of the 2015 and 2016 Mathematics study programs, took place in lecture hall d03.101.06.
