Workshop on Conformal Mapping with Dr. Gerard Jeurnink from the University of Twente, the Netherlands

The Department of Mathematics Education, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY), once again held an international-scale academic event through the Visiting Professor program entitled Workshop on Conformal Mapping. The event featured Dr. Gerard Jeurnink from the University of Twente, the Netherlands, who delivered a public lecture to undergraduate Mathematics students as well as Master’s and Doctoral students of Mathematics Education. The workshop took place in the Auditorium, 4th Floor, Graduate Building of FMIPA UNY, on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, from 1:00 to 3:00 PM (WIB).
Guided by Dr. Nikenasih Binatari as the Master of Ceremony, the workshop opened with high enthusiasm from the participants. In his presentation, Dr. Jeurnink discussed three key topics in conformal mapping theory, namely The Joukowski Mapping, Stereographic Projections, and Mobius Transformation. The material was delivered systematically and applicatively, providing deeper insights to students across different levels of study.
Beyond the technical mathematical content, Dr. Jeurnink also engaged in an open discussion with master’s and doctoral students on the comparisons and unique characteristics of mathematics education systems in the Netherlands and Indonesia. The discussion covered curriculum, teaching approaches, and opportunities for collaborative research. In addition, he shared his experiences and insights regarding career pathways as a teacher and as a PhD student in the Netherlands, offering fresh inspiration for UNY students aspiring to pursue further studies abroad.
This workshop served as a valuable moment for all participants to broaden their academic horizons while building international networks. The enthusiasm of the participants was evident in the numerous questions raised during the Q&A session, reflecting a collaborative spirit and deep interest in the topics discussed. The presence of Visiting Professors such as Dr. Jeurnink is expected to foster a more open and global academic atmosphere within FMIPA UNY.
Concluding the workshop, Dr. Gerard Jeurnink expressed his appreciation for the enthusiasm and active participation of UNY students. He highlighted that the potential for collaboration between UNY and educational institutions in the Netherlands is wide open, particularly in the areas of mathematics education research and academic mobility. “I am very impressed with the students’ eagerness to learn here. I believe that in the future there will be many opportunities for synergy between UNY and international partners to advance a more inclusive and progressive mathematics education,” he remarked. (HnR)
