Webinar Series #5: Best Practices in Mathematics Education from High-Performing PISA Countries

On Saturday, November 9, 2024, the Mathematics Education Study Program, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Yogyakarta State University (UNY), successfully held Webinar Series #5. This edition carried the theme “Best Practices in Mathematics Education from High-Performing PISA Countries” and featured two experienced speakers: Wiworo, S.Si., M.M., a trainer from BBGP DIY, and Nurina Ayuningtyas, M.Pd., a numeracy specialist from Article 33 as well as a lecturer in Mathematics Education at Universitas PGRI Delta Sidoarjo.

The event, conducted online via Zoom and streamed live on the UNY Mathematics Education YouTube channel, was opened by Dr. Kuswari Hernawati, M.Kom., coordinator of the Undergraduate Mathematics Education Program at Yogyakarta State University. In her remarks, she emphasized the importance of understanding and adapting best practices in mathematics learning from countries that have excelled in mathematical literacy, such as Singapore, China, and Russia.

In the first session, Wiworo, S.Si., M.M., delivered a presentation titled “Learning Mathematics Correctly and Meaningfully from Singapore, China, and Russia.” He discussed Indonesia’s position in PISA mathematical literacy and explored the learning approaches applied in those countries. Following that, Nurina Ayuningtyas, M.Pd., presented on “Adapting Mathematics Learning from Countries with High PISA Performance.” She connected the learning objectives of mathematics in the Indonesian Merdeka Curriculum with the PISA 2020 Mathematics Framework. She also highlighted meaningful learning practices, such as math talk in Singapore, and shared examples of government initiatives to enhance mathematical literacy, including the adaptation of Japanese textbooks for Indonesian Grade 1 and 2 students, as well as concrete cases of numeracy learning based on international practices.

The webinar was also supported by a research group consisting of Prof. Dr. Ariyadi Wijaya, Dr. R. Rosnawati, M.Si., Drs. Tuharto, M.Si., and Caturiyati, M.Si. The enthusiasm of participants—lecturers, students, and teachers—was evident through interactive discussions and active engagement in the Q&A sessions. Through this event, it is expected that educators will gain inspiration to continue innovating, adapting, and strengthening the quality of mathematics learning in Indonesia.
