WEBINAR SERIES #4 2024: Three Years of Implementing the Merdeka Curriculum in Mathematics Learning at Schools

The Department of Mathematics Education, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Yogyakarta State University (UNY), once again held its Webinar Series on Saturday, October 19, 2024. The fourth edition of the series carried the theme “Three Years of Implementing the Merdeka Curriculum in Mathematics Learning at Schools”, featuring two speakers: Nila Mareta Murdiyani, S.Pd., M.Sc. and Irfana Steviano, S.Pd., M.Ed. The event was conducted online via Zoom and live-streamed on the UNY Mathematics Education YouTube channel.

The event began with an opening speech by Dr. Retno Subekti, M.Sc., Secretary of the Department of Mathematics Education. She expressed hope that this webinar would inspire educators to continue innovating and adapting to curriculum changes in Indonesia.

The first speaker, Irfana Steviano, S.Pd., M.Ed., presented material on literacy, numeracy, and learning technologies within the Merdeka Curriculum. He also shared literacy and numeracy programs for elementary school teachers, as well as the use of various technologies supporting literacy and numeracy activities—such as GeoGebra, Mathplanet, Mathisfun, Prodigy Math, and Khan Academy—along with their classroom applications.

The second speaker, Nila Mareta Murdiyani, S.Pd., M.Sc., delivered a presentation titled “Readiness of Prospective Mathematics Teachers in Implementing the Merdeka Curriculum: A Study at Five Universities in Yogyakarta”. She highlighted the importance of strengthening prospective mathematics teachers’ understanding of the Merdeka Curriculum to optimize the implementation of its principles and objectives. Nevertheless, she noted that, overall, the readiness of prospective teachers in planning, implementing, and evaluating Merdeka Curriculum-based learning has shown promising progress.

The webinar was attended by lecturers, students, and teachers from various regions across Indonesia. The enthusiasm of participants was evident through their active engagement in both the presentations and Q&A sessions, reflecting the relevance of the webinar’s theme to today’s educational needs.

Through the successful implementation of Webinar Series #4, the Mathematics Education Study Program, FMIPA UNY, reaffirms its commitment to providing a platform for lecturers, teachers, and students to expand their knowledge and skills in mathematics education—particularly in the context of the Merdeka Curriculum. This webinar is expected to serve as inspiration for educators to continue innovating and adapting to ongoing curriculum changes in Indonesia.
