Webinar Series #2 2024: Numerical Literacy and Statistical Literacy

The Department of Mathematics Education, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Yogyakarta State University, once again successfully held Webinar Series #2 on Saturday, September 7, 2024. This webinar was part of a series organized by the Mathematics Education Study Program of FMIPA UNY, with the theme this time focusing on “Numerical Literacy and Statistical Literacy.” The event was conducted online via Zoom and also streamed live through the Mathematics Education UNY YouTube channel.

This webinar featured two expert speakers in their fields, Iin Fibriastuti, S.Pd.Si. and Siti Kholifah, S.Si., M.Pd. Both presenters delivered in-depth and comprehensive explanations on numerical literacy and statistical literacy, topics that are highly relevant in today’s educational context. The session was moderated by the experienced Heru Sukoco, S.Si., M.Pd.

The event opened with welcoming remarks by the Secretary of the Department of Mathematics Education, Dr. Retno Subekti, M.Sc. She expressed her hope that Webinar Series #2 would enhance understanding of fundamental concepts in numeracy and statistics, connect mathematics learning with real-life contexts, and foster students’ critical and analytical thinking skills. The webinar was attended by lecturers, students, and education practitioners from various regions across Indonesia, reflecting high enthusiasm for the chosen theme.

The first speaker, Iin Fibriastuti, S.Pd.Si., presented material on numerical literacy, analyzing the causes of low numeracy scores and offering alternative solutions for improvement. The second speaker, Siti Kholifah, S.Si., M.Pd., explored the “secrets” of statistics and the importance of statistical literacy in the 21st century. She also shared strategies to improve statistical literacy.

Through the successful implementation of Webinar Series #2, the Department of Mathematics Education, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Yogyakarta State University reaffirmed its commitment to organizing high-quality webinars that benefit society, academics, and practitioners by providing new insights and inspiration to apply numerical and statistical literacy in teaching and learning.
