ICCLR Successfully Hosts First Batch of Cognitive Load-Based Multimedia Workshop, Enhancing Competence in Effective Media Design

The Multimedia Workshop Based on Cognitive Load Theory – Batch 1 was successfully held on Saturday (July 25, 2026), at the Master’s and Doctoral Building of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY). The workshop aimed to enhance participants’ competencies in developing effective learning multimedia based on the scientific principles of Cognitive Load Theory (CLT).

The workshop began with a presentation entitled “Fundamentals of Cognitive Load Theory delivered by the Director of ICCLR, Endah Retnowati, Ph.D. In this session, participants gained an in-depth understanding of the fundamental concepts of CLT, including intrinsic cognitive load, extraneous cognitive load, and germane cognitive load, as well as how the theory can be applied to the design of learning multimedia that effectively supports students’ learning processes.

Participants then took part in the first practical session, facilitated by Tista Sugiarti, M.Pd., which explored an example of multimedia development for the topic of ratios. Through this session, participants learned how to implement CLT principles to create learning multimedia that is engaging and interactive while minimizing unnecessary cognitive load (extraneous load).

In the afternoon session, Endah Retnowati, Ph.D. delivered another presentation on the multimedia development procedure. Participants were guided through the systematic stages of designing learning multimedia, from needs analysis and design development to the development process and product evaluation, ensuring that the resulting multimedia aligns with the principles of CLT-based instructional design.

The workshop continued with a second practical session facilitated by Kania Nurma Litasari, S.Pd., featuring an example of multimedia development for the topic of plane figures. This session provided participants with a concrete illustration of how theoretical principles can be applied to develop effective learning media that are appropriate for the characteristics of geometry topics.

To conclude the workshop, participants joined a consultation session on their initial multimedia materials with Kania Nurma Litasari, S.Pd. and Tista Sugiarti, M.Pd. During this interactive session, participants received direct guidance and feedback on the multimedia designs they were developing. The workshop concluded with an independent practice assignment as a follow-up to the materials covered throughout the workshop.

Through the Multimedia Workshop Based on Cognitive Load Theory – Batch 1, participants are expected to be able to develop learning multimedia that is not only visually engaging but also scientifically grounded in CLT principles to optimize the learning process and improve the quality of classroom instruction. The workshop also serves as a tangible reflection of ICCLR’s commitment to supporting research-based learning innovation in Indonesia.
