A Concrete Step in International Partnership: FMIPA UNY and the University of Sydney Sign an Implementation Agreement

YOGYAKARTA – Strengthening its commitment to global recognition, the Indonesian Center for Cognitive Load Research (ICCLR) and the Department of Mathematics Education, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY), have officially established a strategic partnership with the University of Sydney. This international collaboration was formalized through the signing of an Implementation Agreement by both parties.

The signing ceremony, held on Monday, 3 August 2026, was attended by Vice Dean of FMIPA UNY Prof. Dr. Tien Aminatun, S.Si., M.Si.; Head of the Department of Mathematics Education Prof. Dr. Sri Andayani, S.Si., M.Kom.; Director of ICCLR Endah Retnowati, S.Pd., M.Ed., Ph.D.; and a number of lecturers from FMIPA UNY.

The partnership was initiated to strengthen international collaboration in the field of education. Its initial implementation was realized through a series of workshops on “Multimedia Based on Cognitive Load Theory” and a public lecture entitled “Instructional Design and Research on Cognitive Load Theory.” These prestigious academic activities were enthusiastically attended by lecturers and students from the Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral programs in Mathematics Education at FMIPA UNY.

Beyond workshops and lectures, the partnership also took a more direct form through an exclusive Student’s Research Consultation session for doctoral students in Mathematics Education at FMIPA UNY whose research focuses on Cognitive Load Theory.

During this special session, the students had the valuable opportunity to engage in face-to-face discussions and consultations with Cognitive Load Theory expert Assoc. Prof. Paul Ginns from the University of Sydney. The discussion was highly engaging and interactive, with students openly exploring various research challenges, ranging from refining dissertation designs and developing valid research instruments to conducting technical analyses of experimental research findings.

Through this constructive exchange of ideas and expertise, the strategic partnership is expected to strengthen the analytical capabilities of ICCLR students. Ultimately, the collaboration is projected to contribute to higher-quality research and dissertations while generating a broader impact on educational literacy at the global level.
