Optimizing Teachers' Capacity through Interactive Applications and Artificial Intelligence Training to Support Digital Learning

Klaten – The Community Service (PkM) Team from the Department of Mathematics Education, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY), organized a training program entitled "Optimizing Teachers' Capacity in the Use of Interactive Applications and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to Support Digital Learning" at SMA Negeri 1 Wonosari, Klaten Regency. The program, attended by 53 teachers, aimed to enhance teachers' competencies in utilizing digital technologies to support innovative learning that meets the demands of 21st-century education.
The training was officially opened by the Principal of SMA Negeri 1 Wonosari, Mr. Sigit Toto Mursito, S.Si., M.M., who expressed his appreciation to the Community Service Team from the Department of Mathematics Education, FMIPA UNY, for organizing the event. In his opening remarks, he emphasized his hope that the training would broaden teachers' perspectives on the use of digital technologies, enabling them to create more effective, creative, and student-centered learning experiences.
The head of the program, Dr. Kuswari Hernawati, S.Si., M.Kom., explained that the rapid advancement of technology, particularly Artificial Intelligence (AI), offers significant opportunities for teachers to improve the quality of teaching and learning. According to her, AI can assist teachers not only in designing instructional materials but also in developing interactive learning media, preparing assessments, and personalizing learning according to students' individual needs.
"Through this training, we hope that teachers will not only become familiar with AI technology and interactive applications but also acquire practical skills to integrate them into the learning process, thereby creating more engaging, effective, and meaningful learning experiences," said Dr. Kuswari Hernawati.
The first session was delivered by Dr. Muhammad Irfan, S.Si., M.Pd., who presented the topic "Introduction to Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Its Applications in Education." Participants gained an understanding of the fundamental concepts of AI, recent developments in artificial intelligence technologies, and various examples of their implementation in educational settings. The session also introduced strategies for the ethical and responsible use of AI to support the development of teaching modules, learning media, assessment materials, and more effective instructional practices.
In the following session, Dr. Kuswari Hernawati led a hands-on workshop on the use of LUMI Education as an interactive learning platform. Participants explored various features of LUMI, including the development of learning media using City Map and Interactive Book templates, which can be utilized to create more engaging and interactive learning experiences. During the practical session, teachers developed their own digital learning materials that could be implemented across various subject areas.
Participants demonstrated strong enthusiasm throughout the program. Active discussions, question-and-answer sessions, and hands-on activities reflected the teachers' high level of interest in adopting digital technologies for classroom instruction. The participants not only gained conceptual insights into AI but also acquired practical skills that they can immediately apply in their teaching practices.
Through this Community Service program, the Department of Mathematics Education, FMIPA UNY, hopes to contribute to strengthening teachers' digital competencies while supporting the transformation of learning in schools. Continued collaboration between higher education institutions and schools is expected to play a vital role in improving the quality of education through the innovative, adaptive, and sustainable use of technology.
