Maxima Workshop: Joint Activity of Expertise Group Mathematics Study Program
The Expertise Group (KBK) from the Department of Mathematics Education, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Yogyakarta State University (UNY) on 2 - 3 October 2019 conducted the Maxima a Computer Algebra System Workshop. This activity was carried out because of the joint KBK, namely KBK analysis and geometry, KBK algebra, KBK biological mathematics, KBK computer, KBK Statistics, KBK Financial Mathematics, and KBK applied analysis. The speaker at this workshop was Prof. José Antonio Vallejo, Ph.D. from the Science Faculty, Universidad Autónoma de San Luis Potosí, México.
Maxima is a piece of software as part of the Computer Akgebra System (CAS) that is used to solve mathematical problems. Maxima is free software that is user friendly. Jose, the workshop speaker, is one of the package compilers in Maxima. It is a pride for Department of Mathematics Education FMIPA UNY that Jose is willing to give a workshop in person.
Workshop participants consisted of undergraduate and graduate students from UNY, doctoral students from both UNY and UGM, lecturers from UNY, Unnes, UIN Sunan Kalijaga and IAIN Kudus. Overall, the total participants were 40. The workshop material was very interesting because it was often used in lectures, namely Basic Arithmetic, Elementary Algebra and Calculus, Elementary Number Theory, Graphics, Differential Equations, Animated Graphics, and Cryptography.
In one of Jose's explanations, it was said that "we should be challenged to try new things, new knowledge, outside our habits". In other words, we are expected to always look for new broader knowledge.
