Practical Teaching Program with Mrs. Ika Zubaida, M.Pd

Nowadays, the development of technology is growing very fast. This has both positive and negative impacts. To reduce the negative impact, several skills are needed, one of which is higher order thinking and needs to be taught early on. The Mathematics Education study program at Yogyakarta State University bridges prospective teachers to teach these skills through the course “HOTS mathematics study”.

The course is an elective course at the undergraduate level with lecturers Mrs. Endah Retnowati, Ph. D and Dr. Atmini Dhoruri. On March 20, 2023, a collaborative lecture was held, namely the teaching practitioner program. This program collaborates with Mrs. Ika Zubaida, M.Pd who is a practitioner teacher from Jakarta Al-Izhar Senior High School.

Starting her presentation, Mrs. Ika Zubaida asked a question “why must be HOTS?”. Armed with this question, Mrs. Ika invited the audience to actively give their opinions. Not only asking questions, Ms. Ika also provided ways to create a problem so that it can be said to fall into the HOTS category. In addition, she also provided case studies and examples of her activities when teaching at school.

Another interesting point is that HOTS is not always for students, but teachers also need HOTS, especially in giving feedback on students' arguments. He underlined that in practice, teachers need to make learning more meaningful, involve students, and make the class fun.

The lecture lasted from 12:40 to 14:20 WIB. A total of 32 students attended this class looking enthusiastic and increasingly curious about how to improve students' higher order thinking skills. However, it did not feel that time went very fast. The curiosity of the lecture participants will be paid the following week on the same schedule.
